Abstract

A participatory approach was employed to enhance the capacity of dairy farmers through knowledge transfer on dairy nutrition and training in the use of the TRUdairyFeed program for ration formulation. The improved rations were subsequently implemented in dairy herds in Dilang sub district, Patthananikhom district, Lop buri province. Data on knowledge adoption were collected through satisfaction assessments, and milk production was evaluated before and after dietary adjustment over a three-month period. The results indicated that knowledge adoption among dairy farmers was at a good level on average. The use of the TRUdairyFeed program resulted in rations with nutrient composition and proportions closer to the requirements of dairy cattle. However, due to limited financial resources and reliance on locally available feed ingredients, the rations were still deficient in rumen undegradable protein and net energy for lactation. The feed cost was 5.50 Baht/kg. Total mixed ration (TMR) feeding was not implemented on farms. Feed intake decreased by 5.75 kg/head/day, while feed cost was reduced by 5.88 Baht/head/day. Economic return increased by 16.74 Baht/head/day. Milk yield averaged 14.29 kg/head/day, representing an increase of 0.79 kg/head/day. Several milk quality parameters tended to improve; however, milk protein content remained below the standard threshold. There were no statistically significant differences were observed between pre- and post-ration adjustment in all measured parameters. In conclusion, a good level of knowledge adoption was achieved among dairy farmers. The application of the TRUdairyFeed program for ration formulation contributed to reduced daily feed costs, milk yield and several milk quality parameters tended to improve. Therefore, further dissemination of this knowledge and technology to dairy farmers is recommended.
